Sydney Opera House

Waterfronts

Below the iconic sails of the Sydney Opera House, around the forecourt and above the harbour, Monsoon Bin Enclosures keep litter neat and tidy under sails of their own.

Tens of thousands of people approach the Opera House every day. In a year, more than eight million people visit. This includes those attending a concert, celebrating with a meal, or just appreciating the national landmark from the ground. At the peak of virtual reality game Pokémon Go the forecourt was packed with gamers sitting on every available bench and step.

The venue serves 2.5 million food and beverage customers a year alone, with plenty of people bringing their own food for picnics with waterfront views.

Runners and strollers descend the stairs from the Royal Botanic Garden, or take a quick circuit of the boardwalk around Bennelong Point, carrying water with them.

That quickly adds up to a lot of waste. Keeping such a high traffic area clean and tidy, while meeting sustainability targets, is no small undertaking.

Textura scratch-resistant coating helps to keep bin surfaces clean and smooth.

Textura scratch-resistant coating helps to keep bin surfaces clean and smooth.

At strategic points around the Opera House forecourt, dual Monsoon Bin Enclosures sit in pairs, marked garbage and recycling.

Each roof is powdercoated in dark bronze with Street Furniture Australia’s Textura finish, a coating with non-stick properties that helps to keep the surface presentable and clean.

Monsoon’s unique design protects from rain, and keeps out the infamous Australian ‘Bin Chicken.’

An iconic litter solution for an iconic landmark.
