Goulburn Mulwaree Council has created stimulating and safe shared street spaces in the high streets precinct of Goulburn in regional NSW for the community to enjoy.
With funding from the NSW Department of Planning and Environment’s Streets as Shared Spaces program, the project aims to increase liveliness, drive collaborative partnerships, encourage the community to shop locally, create safer walking and cycling spaces and increase the night-time economy.
George Angelis, Director Operations at Goulburn Mulwaree Council, says the bright new furniture has been particularly welcomed by hospitality businesses.
“We have received positive comments from shopkeepers that the project has made the area more attractive, it encourages people to walk up, and there has been an increase in foot traffic.
“The installation of the ChillOUT Trees at Belmore Park provides places to rest, meet and work outdoors. Feedback is overwhelmingly positive, the community has said it’s a great place to sit and watch the world go by, and the hubs encourage community interaction.
“We have selected durable materials and finishes to reduce maintenance costs and improve sustainability, with timber-look and powder coated aluminium battens for the seating.
“The timber-look, Wood Without Worry, battens and fade resistant DuraBright range mean the furniture will look nice for longer. This means we focus on providing more for the community instead of maintaining wood furniture.
“Adding colour was a key tool used to activate the spaces, using the DuraBright powder coat range and contemporary muted colours on seating and planters.”
Colourful Cafe Tables and Stools, Linea Cubes and Frame Planters, are among the products picked for the social hub on the corner of Montague Street and Auburn Street as part of the cafe district.
“The bright colours of the seating and planters were a trial at changing it up in Goulburn, to see how the community would respond. Feedback so far has been positive regarding the brightness and function of the furniture.”
